چکیده

background: the compositions of ferrous sulphate, agarose and xylenol orange dye (fax) and ferrous sulphate, gelatin and xylenol orange dye (fgx) in solution of distilled water and sulphuric acid are two tissue-equivalent gel dosimeters. ionizing radiation causes oxidation of fe2+ ion to fe3+ ions which diffuse through the gel matrix and blur the image of absorbed dose over a period of hours after irradiation. materials and methods: 25 mm sulphuric acid, 0.4 mm ferrous ammonium sulphate, 0.2 mm xylenol orange dye and 1% by weight agarose in distilled water named fax and 0.1 mm ferrous ammonium sulphate, 0.1 mm xylenol orange dye, 50 mm sulphuric acid and 5% by weight gelatin in distilled water named fgx are used as two gel dosimeters. all chemicals were supplied by sigma aldridge company, germany . the gels were poured in perspex casts and were irradiated to a beam of x ray from linear accelerators or x ray machine. results: in this study diffusion coefficients of fax and fgx dosimeters have been measured through a computer program for different temperatures. the ferric ion diffusion coefficient (d) for the fax and fgx dosimeters were measured as (1.19 ± 0.03) x 10-2 cm2.hr-1 and (0.83 ± 0.03) x 10-2 cm2.hr-1 respectively at room temperature. conclusion: for both dosimeters the diffusion coefficients decreased with gel storage temperatures down to 6oc. fgx dosimeters have advantage of lower diffusion coefficient for a specified temperature. iran . j. radiat. res. 2003 1(2): 79 – 86.

Measurement of ferric ion diffusion coefficient in Fricke-infused agarose gel from MR image intensity changes

Abstract-A mathematical modeling was adopted to calculate the ferric ion diffusion coefficient based on the radiation induced magnetic resonance (MR) image intensity change in Fricke-agarose gels. A fast magnetic resonance imaging acquisition technique was employed to avoid the smearing of acquired data due to diffusion over an extended period of time. Our results showed that for a Fricke-agaro...

Review of Fricke gel dosimeters

The innovation of adding a gel matrix to the traditional Fricke dosimeter to stabilize geometric information established the field of gel dosimetry for radiation therapy. A discussion of Fricke gels provides an overview of the issues that determine the dose response of all gel dosimeters in general. In this paper we review some of the features of Fricke systems to illustrate these issues and, i...

Dynamics of polymerization in polyacrylamide gel (PAG) dosimeters: (II) modeling oxygen diffusion.

Oxygen contamination of a polyacrylamide gel (PAG) dosimeter can have a significant detrimental effect upon the performance characteristics of the gel as a dosimeter. Oxygen contamination can occur during preparation, but can also arise from the diffusion of atmospheric oxygen through vessel walls. Even 'trace' amounts of oxygen present in any gaseous space (usually nitrogen filled) between the...

Evaluation of Ferrous-Agarose-Xylenol Gel Properties in Radiation Dosimetry

Background: Over recent decades, modern protocols of external beam radioÂ‌therapy and radiation techniques such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) have been developed. These methods are extremely sensitive to errors in treatment delivery, so that it is essential to apply a high resolution 3D dosimetry system that has high sensitivity and is capable of measuring and verifying the complex...
